KitchenAid Oven Sabbath Mode: Settings, Symbols and Fixes

How KitchenAid oven Sabbath Mode works, what Sab or 5A6 on the display means, how to exit or reset it, and which look-alike settings are not faults.

KitchenAid oven Sabbath Mode keeps the oven baking at one temperature you choose, for example 200°F to hold a meal warm, while only Bake runs, no tones sound and opening the door neither switches the light nor immediately switches the elements. You turn it on and off from the Settings, Options or Tools menu on newer controls, or with the key hold listed in your use and care guide on older keypads, and while it is active the display reads Sabbath, Sab, SAB, 5A6 or 5Ab.

What does Sabbath Mode change on a KitchenAid oven?

  • Bake is the only function. Broil, convection and self-clean stay off until you exit.
  • No sounds. Key presses and end-of-cook tones are silenced.
  • No feedback. The display does not show temperature changes, so it can look frozen.
  • The door does nothing. Opening it does not switch the light or make the elements kick on right away.

How do you turn Sabbath Mode on and off?

Steps vary by control, so find your model number first: on built-in wall ovens the label sits on the top of the oven cavity, and on commercial-style ranges on the cavity ceiling. Then follow that model’s guide. In general:

  1. Start a normal Bake at the temperature you want.
  2. Open Settings, Options or Tools (or use your keypad’s key hold) and select Sabbath Mode.
  3. Confirm the display shows Sab or 5A6.
  4. To exit, repeat the same path; normal tones and display return.

On a double wall oven, check whether the mode covers one cavity or both. Many households in Port Washington, Great Neck and Manhasset keep Shabbat and the holidays, so do a dry run on a weekday rather than on a Friday afternoon.

Which displays look like a fault but are only a setting?

Why does Sabbath Mode seem not to work?

Three mistakes cause most of it. Owners expect broil or convection, which will not run. They set a new temperature and see no change on the display, which is normal here. Or they check it with a thermometer, which KitchenAid advises against: the heat cycles on and off, and each door opening changes that cycle.

If the oven runs hot or cool every day, calibration is a setting, not a repair. On some models, holding the Temp/Time down arrow for 5 seconds shows “0°F CAL”, adjustable in 5°F (3°C) steps between 30°F (18°C) and -30°F (-18°C).

To reset a control stuck in Sabbath Mode, repeat the exit sequence, then switch off the breaker for one minute and restore power.

When is it a real oven problem?

Code 1d11 on a wall oven, or F2 on a range, may mean a problem with the oven temperature sensor, the control or their wiring. Turn the breaker off for one minute, back on, and watch for one minute; if the code returns, schedule service. F9 or F9 E0 can mean a miswired outlet or power-line noise; on an oven installed within about 3 months, have an electrician check the supply.

Typical ranges: a diagnostic service call runs $95–$149, a thermostat or temperature sensor $280–$450, and control board or electronics work $400–$850. The firm quote is given on site after diagnosis; see repair pricing or wall oven repair. Port Washington Wolf Appliance Repair is an independent service, not manufacturer-authorized: (914) 483-3420.

Frequently asked questions

What does Sabbath Mode do on my oven?

It lets the oven bake at a steady temperature through Shabbat or a holiday without reacting to everyday actions. Tones, the door-activated light and display changes are off, and only Bake works.

What does the grill symbol on my oven mean?

The grill symbol, usually a zigzag line at the top of a square, means Broil, the top element’s direct high heat. It is unavailable during Sabbath Mode.

How do I reset Sabbath Mode on a KitchenAid oven?

Repeat the menu path or key hold you used to start it. If Sab or 5A6 stays on, switch off the breaker for one minute and try again; if it still won’t clear, the control may need service.

How do I turn off Sabbath Mode on my KitchenAid refrigerator?

Use the refrigerator’s own guide, because its button sequence is separate from the oven’s.
